So I am off to my yearly vacation... and I am feeling that familiar traveler's remorse. You know.... you wonder why you even chose to go in the first place. Although everyone is excited for you -- you can't get into it. All you see is work and things to do and wonder why you just didn't stay home.
Does anyone else have this? I hate it, it rather ruins my vacation. Sometimes I feel like it is because I am just too locked into work and the life... but.. I am trying to decompress.
I also noted lately I resent that my vacations aren't really ... well used? I just can't get enough time to totally be prepared for the vacation and I end up going totally unprepared and don't use my time to my best advantage. I hate that. When I used to go on vacation prior to working full time I would have every thing mapped and ready and I would feel like I would totally use my time well.

Yeah, I must say I've felt that way when heading off on vacation at times. But, once I get going I almost always relax and have fun, and I'm sure you will too. It's the anticipation of having to get yourself organised that's the hard part! It would be good, of course, if you were able to get more time off to prepare or even spend away - one day you can look forward to that, I hope! Can you ever take, like, a week and go away somewhere? It seems that Americans in general don't get all that much vacation time (except teachers, of course)? Or does it depend on the job/how long you've been there? Full time workers here get a minimum of 4 weeks (the govt increased it from 3 weeks a year or two ago), and I actually get a total of 7 weeks because I am a shift worker and therefore am expected to work on public holidays. Regardless of whether I do actually work them or not, I still get the full 11 public holidays added to my annual leave quota, plus an extra 4 days in recognition of being a shift worker. Which adds up to 7 weeks. It's just another reason why it's hard to give up this job. I think having decent leave time is so important to employee engagement and mental health. In Japan holiday time is very limited, and while I would love to go back and live and work there one day, that would be the one thing that would make me hesitate. It was fine for a year, but any longer than that and I think I'd be getting a bit stressed. They have three (short) holiday periods during the year and that's when EVERYONE takes their holidays, so things just get mad. Anyway...probably gone off on a bit of a tangent here. Hope you have a great time!

I get three weeks. I have been trying to save it this year as well. If I leave my job voluntarily.. or not, I get the accrued leave. So I am trying to get that as high as possible. There is a limit of 240 hours per year. Suzie Orman says you should have 8 month emergency fund in case you lose your job, that is my fund. But this is one of the best leave deals I have ever received. When I work there 15 years I will go up to 8 days accrued per two weeks. Of course, I kind of feel like there is no way I will be there 15 years... I have, already, been there 7. So... I know, I know i will probably have a great time... but I feel like the first time I don't well,, that will be the confirmation that it is more trouble than it is worth. It is hard to get your head out of everyday life.

I understand traveler's remorse completely. You have to kill yourself preparing to be gone and then when you come back you have to kill yourself with either all the work that has piled up in your absence or else been done incorrectly by someone else. almost makes it not worth while to go away. I think that might be one of the reasons so many people do not take their vacation time.

. I think that might be one of the reasons so many people do not take their vacation time. Often times I do find that it was worth it but, so like today. I went into work to print out my boarding pass. It was only supposed to be a few minutes but my ***** computer wouldn't work. After about 15 minutes I got the pass and left. I get to my car.. OMG someone has parked behind it, blocking me in. I was parked by a chapel and it was someone at the services so I had to wait until that was over. So, what should have been a 15 minute thing took 1 hour. I came home and just lay on the couch exhausted and frustrated.
